Miller Research, with the Pacific Northwest Potato Research Consortium, hosts a potato pest management field day on 20 August from 8am to noon at its Rupert, Idaho facility, supported by the industry-funded potato commissions of Idaho, Washington and Oregon. Presentations focus on chemical disease management and four consortium-funded projects: alternatives to Metam soil fumigants for Verticillium control, fungicide programme performance against foliar disease, and management of Potato Mop Top Virus, Powdery Scab and Black Dot, the last an increasing concern in storage. Jeff Miller, president and principal investigator, said the day also covers a long-term soil health project running since 2019 on fumigation, compost and green manure. Early Mop Top findings show symptom reduction in early storage. A concluded Bacterial Soft Rot project found that storage preparation — immediate drying of washed potatoes — was more effective than bruise reduction.
