The hydrogel, synthesized from eco-friendly biomaterials—sodium alginate, cyclodextrin, lemongrass oil, and calcium ions—acts as a smart delivery system. It gradually releases a natural germination inhibitor, ensuring a sustained and controlled effect over extended storage periods. This targeted approach not only delays the onset of sprouting but also drastically reduces the metabolic processes that lead to greening, offering a safe and chemical-free alternative to conventional synthetic suppressants.

Beyond its anti-sprouting efficacy, the hydrogel demonstrates a critical protective function by limiting the biosynthesis of solanine, a toxic glycoalkaloid that renders green potatoes unfit for consumption.
